Large crowds of May Day holidaymakers were left stranded after heavy fog forced closure of a pivotal airport in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Saturday, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport was closed at 4.25am, when dense fog reduced visibility to less than 200 metres, airport authorities said.
All flights to and from Chengdu were cancelled Saturday morning until further notice.
Chengdu airport is scheduled to handle 870 flight landings and takeoffs Saturday, involving 63,000 passengers.
The meteorological bureau said the fog was caused by high humidity after a shower on Friday night.
