HobbitonThe Hobbiton Movie set that is located in Central Waikoto has enough potential to lure in a large number of tourists for yet another half century or even more.

Jason Dawson, the chief executive of Hamilton and Waikoto Tourism is confident of the uniqueness of this tourist attraction and is certain about the longevity of its popularity. He then compared Hobbiton to Salzburg in Austria. This is actually the location for the musical movie, ‘The Sound of Music’ that was released in the year 1965.

A new generation of tourists who are ardent fans of this movie are turned on by the performances of Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews who continue their visits in Salzburg.

Dawson claimed that the streets of Salzburg have continued to act as a magnet for many generations of tourists to Austria. He also asserted that many generations of movie fans have wandered along the same streets that had once been a spectacle of the characters of The Sound of Music movie like the von Trapp children and Maria who ran along across the nearby hills that were utilized for the film.

Dawson has predicted the same trend for Matamata that is the gateway to Hobbiton.

Dawson said that the longevity of the movie set also depends on how beautifully Matamata welcomed the opportunity to react to the ever increasing popularity and how it leverages it to develop itself.

Russell Alexander, the general manager of Hobbiton has received acknowledgement for his contribution towards the thriving tourist hub.

The Matamata Public Relations Association president had presented him with the Kedy to the City for his work towards developing this attraction into a popular one among new generation fans.

Hobbiton commenced its tours 14 years ago with just one van and driver and ran three tours per day that concluded with an ice cream at the Hampton Dairy.

The success of Hobbiton is quite evident thanks to its series of awards that it received in 2016 that included NZ Tourism Industry Awards: Business Excellence Award, the inaugural People’s Choice Award and the Tourism Marketing Campaign Award.

Besides, it had also won the Business Excellence Award at the Matamata-Piako Business Awards and the Supreme, Business Marketing Award and Business Growth Award.
