Young Territorians will have no shortage of activities and events to keep them entertained over the upcoming school holiday period thanks to the Northern Territory Government’s Youth Engagement program.
Minister for Young Territorians Peter Styles said the government’s Office of Youth Affairs funds organisations to provide an array of drug and alcohol free recreation events and personal development and leadership programs across the festive break.
“The holiday season is an exciting time for students and families but it is also a time which can present the issue of youth becoming bored and falling into unfortunate behaviour,” Minister Styles said.
“The Youth Vibe Holiday Grants program specifically targets 12 to 25 year olds and I am pleased to announce it will provide just over $45,000 in funding for 35 youth events right across the Territory over the coming holiday season.
“The NT Government partners with a range of organisations including Councils and non-government organisations to support and promote holiday activities.
“Importantly, these events and activities are largely youth-driven with youth advisory groups active in each region to ensure the initiatives are representative of what the youth want and need in their specific communities.”
The full calendar of regional events includes:
Hip Hop workshops – Darwin
Movie night – Central Australia
Disco, pool party and laser tag – Tennant Creek
Holiday Sunset Discos – in seven East Arnhem communities
Movie Day – Katherine
Cooking club, bush flicks and pool party – West Daly
“All events and activities are drug and alcohol free, provide safe environments for attendees and promote positive community participation amongst our youth,” Mr Styles said.
“As Minister for Young Territorians I am proud to acknowledge the hard work of not only the Office of Youth Affairs and the local organisations who are hosting events, but of the young people themselves who continue to drive the agenda for these programs.”
