December is officially here, and the True South is buzzing with holiday spirit. Events, festivals, parties and a unique holiday atmosphere make December one of the best months of the year to visit Mississippi.
Enjoying the holidays in Mississippi is a special time. Whether you’re visiting family, passing through or looking for a holiday getaway, the True South has outstanding events happening throughout the month.
The following is a list of some of those festive holiday happenings. Make plans now to
experience one or more of these events this year:
Canton: Victorian Christmas Festival, Now through December 23
The festivities in Canton all take place around the Historic Courthouse Square, decorated with over 200,000 glittering lights. In addition to the Canton Animation Museums and the glittering decorations of the Square, Canton offers holiday visitors many other attractions including the Merchant’s Open House, Carousel on the Square, Miniature Train or Fire Truck on the Square, Old Jail Museum, Log Cabin Behind the Old Jail, and The Railroad Museum.
Southaven: 15th Annual Southern Lights, Now through December 31
Drive through the 116-acre Central Park with 100,000 twinkling lights. Cars can tune to five FM radio stations playing Christmas music as they ride through the park. Don’t miss the Christmas Tree Farm synchronized to music by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Proceeds benefits local charities. Closed Christmas Day.
Natchez: Christmas in Natchez, Now through December 25
In Natchez, the winter holidays begin the Friday after Thanksgiving with the annual Lighting of the Tree and continue through city-wide New Year’s celebrations, including tours of beautifully lit and decorated historic homes, holiday concerts, candlelight carriage rides and more.
Jackson: Bethlehem Tree, Mississippi Museum of Art, December 3 – January 5
Mississippi native Jewell Younger Graeber lovingly acquired the figures in this magnificent
display over more than twenty years, in order to share the collection with the children of
Mississippi. The installation in the Mississippi Museum of Art’s Trustmark Grand Hall includes more than 150 authentic and scarce eighteenth-century figures, and includes beloved religious figures Mary, Joseph, and the Three Magi, along with numerous angels and townspeople.
Biloxi: Christmas at Beauvoir, Now through January 5
Tour the exquisite Victorian decorated home of the last home of Jefferson Davis. View a
miniature Victorian Christmas Village where Santa Claus makes a special appearance and
marvel at the Christmas decorated grounds at this extraordinary event. Come join the festivities, enjoy a unique nighttime tour, and step back in history.
Tylertown: Christmas in the Park, Now through December 31
Christmas in the Park is a colorful Christmas display of millions of lights staged at Holmes
Water Park. More than 32,000 visitors enjoy the display each year. The park is open seven days a week from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.
Collins: Christmas in the Park, Now through December 28
Throughout the Christmas season, travel along a winding path through Collins City Park, marvel at the beautiful light displays and enjoy holiday music at Christmas in the Park. The attraction is open Thursday through Saturday nights only.
Pass Christian: 28th Annual Christmas in the Pass & Boat Parade, December 6
Christmas in the Pass and the Boat Parade make for a wonderful family evening featuring
Santa’s parade, carolers, open house merchants and lighted boat parade. Best viewed from
Scenic Drive. Decorations competition and children’s activities throughout downtown.
Cleveland: A Mississippi Delta Holiday, December 9
Join us for a celebration of Christmas holiday music at the Bologna Performing Arts Center
featuring the Buford Family of Glendora, The Generations of Indianola, the Double Quick Angel Choir and Liz Davis of Madison.
Holly Springs: Holly Springs Christmas Home Tour, December 7-8
Launch the Holiday Season with this special holiday tour of homes in this historic city, decorated in Christmas splendor to reflect the joyous yuletide celebration. Also, enjoy our annual county history tour. Explore and visit the county’s many historical sites on a bus tour narrated by knowledgeable local historians.
Hattiesburg: Zoo Lights, December 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21
Celebrate the Holidays with the zoo! Catch the zoo’s one-of-a-kind Holly Jolly Animal Show and jump aboard the Polar Bear Express with a warm cup of cocoa for a magically illuminated journey in search of Santa. Ticket price includes admission, unlimited train and carousel rides and more.
