Honorees Announced for the 79th Annual MTR Western Sports Star of the Year

Visit SeattleToday the Seattle Sports Commission (SSC) announced the honorees for the 79th Annual MTR Western Sports Star of the Year, the Northwest’s premier celebration of Washington sports. Each January, this show honors the athletes, coaches, media figures, and stories in or from Washington State for their achievements during the previous year.


Honorees are selected by the Sports Star Committee, which is compiled of local sports historians, media and others active in the sports industry. Honorees will be recognized on stage during the event on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Benaroya Hall. Reception is at 5:30 P.M. Show-time is 7:30 P.M.


Paul Allen Award: Ron Crockett
Given to an individual who has made a significant or compelling philanthropic contribution.Ron was the driving force in raising $50 million for the renovation of Husky Stadium. He’s also a big-time supporter of Seattle Children’s Hospital and saved horse-racing in the Pacific Northwest.


SCH Inspirational Award: Zack Lystedt

Given to an inspirational young athlete who has overcome major medical obstacles to inspire others. Zack suffered a catastrophic brain injury in 2006, leading Washington and 48 other states to pass the Lystedt Law to protect athletes who are suspected of having a concussion.


Royal Brougham Award: Bobo Brayton
Given to an individual for a lifetime of achievement in sports and who exemplifies the spirit of our state. Bobo went from being WSU’s first baseball All-American to becoming its all-time winningest coach, winning 1,162 games and 21 conference titles and twice reaching the College World Series.


Keith Jackson Award: Warren Miller
Given to a member of the media for excellence in communicating the sports stories of the State of Washington. As founder of Warren Miller Entertainment, Warren is synonymous with spectacular skiing and snowboarding movies, with credits including books, articles and more than 750 films.


Tickets to the show can be purchased at the Benaroya Hall Box Office, online atwww.benaroyahall.org, or by phone at 206-215-4747. Premium tickets are $100 and include access to the show and VIP reception. Show-only tickets can be purchased for $25.
