Sri Lankan flagA top hotelier said Sri Lanka requires attracting top-notch tourism schools to set up units in the Island to help train the country’s hotel employees. Hoteliers will sincerely need to see how they can stop the current shortage of staff.

Jayantissa Kehelpannala, the President of the Hotels Association, said, “Unless this is done soon, having more hotels with a lack of experienced workers is bound to be a big squeeze on profitability for the industry”

As further hotels open, competition among hotel operators, workers choosing to seek jobs overseas, and a lack of suitably trained employees will put huge pressure and this could be the single biggest challenge, the hospitality industry may face.

Speaking at the AGM of the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka, Kehelpannala pointed out that hotels will have to waste more money on marketing to attract new workers and take on the costs of training them. He warns that Sri Lanka is expected to face increasing global competition, particularly from the neighboring countries in the region, which are attracting growing numbers of tourists.
