A survey of more than 1,000 members of the LGBT community was conducted by leading beach holiday specialist On the Beach, which revealed Ibiza as the most LGBT friendly beach destination in Europe gaining 18% of the vote.
The popular clubbing destination which attracts more than three quarters of a million British tourists to its shores each year was named the most LGBT friendly destination, followed by the Costa del sol with one in 10 naming the popular coastal region the most LGBT friendly.
Mykonos, often considered the gay capital of Europe, was named only the fifth most LGBT friendly destination by On the Beach. The ever-popular Greek island of Corfu was named the third most LGBT friendly destination with 9% of the vote, followed by the Costa Brava region in Spain with 8%.
On the Beach has launched a dedicated area of the website which aims to help the LGBT community plan and book the perfect beach holiday. They have also revealed that many members of the LGBT are unaware of the numerous Pride festivals held around Europe each year.
While 18% said they were aware of the annual Pride event in Ibiza, only 5% were aware of Accept, an annual festival and parade in Cyprus, now in its third year. Only one in 10 said they were aware of the Pride festival in Mykonos, which takes places this year on August 17-21.
Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer, On the Beach said that, Spain has always been a very popular destination for the LGBT community and with so many Pride events held throughout the year, it’s easy to see why it has become a hot spot.
