Marina managers across the globe met in Athens Oct. 24-27 for the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference, organized by the Greek Marinas Association. The event attracted 414 delegates from almost 40 countries to talk about the significance of marinas and waterfront redevelopment, with special emphasis on how marina development can aid boating, tourism and manufacturing development.
For the conference, the theme was “Cross Sea Challenge for Marinas – Setting the Scene for Collective Development and Growth.” Areas of target included electric propulsion, solar piers, floating houses and infrastructure. Also, there were presentations related to security at ports and marinas, oil pollution crisis management and marina marketing.
A day of marina tours permitted delegates to study about the Greek marina market and the way common issues have been solved there.
With international pressures on boating and associated industries, from steel tariffs to environmental legislation, the international forum offered a chance to speak with one voice, according to the group.
“Greek Marinas Association did a wonderful job as hosts of the World Marinas Conference,” Martinho Fortunato said in a statement. Fortunato is ICOMIA Marina Groups chair and CEO of Marlagos, which owns the 462-berth Marina de Lagos in Algarve, Portugal. “The conference has provided many opportunities for in-depth discussion of key issues and future trends and demonstrated that it is up to us as an industry to take a proactive approach in leading and facilitating change.”
