Igniting a passion for public libraries in Camberwell, Australia

People are flocking to the new light and bright Camberwell Library to use the public computers, take classes, borrow books and discs or just have a coffee and a chat at the Ignite Café.

On an inspection visit to the new library, Victoria Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell said the Victorian Coalition Government was proud to invest in important public assets like local libraries.

“One look at this community hub and library, and the smiles of the people using it, confirms the importance of these types of community spaces to Victorians,” Mrs Powell said.

“Along with great coffee, the Ignite Café is giving local young people the work experience and confidence they need to participate in the mainstream economy.

“The author discussions, lessons in family and history, the public computers and the children’s story times are all incredibly popular.

“Just four months after its official opening, this library is already building community connections, with attendance at the programs and events up by almost 150 per cent.

“In December last year, 178 people joined the Camberwell Library – a three- fold increase on the number of new members at the same time the previous year – proves it was a good investment by Boroondara City Council on behalf of this community.”

Mrs Powell said the Coalition Government contributed $350 000 for the new Camberwell Library to be located within the $20 million Camberwell Centre redevelopment.

“The Coalition Government is investing in the future of our communities by building first class community assets through the $17.2 million Living Libraries Infrastructure Program,” Mrs Powell said.

“To date, grants totalling $8.9 million have been provided to 32 library projects. Last financial year more than 1.1 million people accessed the broad range of activities and services offered by Victoria’s public libraries, which is a good measure of their importance.”

During the inspection, Mrs Powell unveiled a plaque recognising the Coalition Government’s contribution. The Camberwell Library was officially opened on 14 September 2012 by the Member for Burwood Graham Watt.
