Improved Safety in Nottinghamshire as New Bridge Over Railway Opens

Published on : Saturday, March 30, 2019

Network RailNetwork Rail has successfully completed a major project to install a new bridleway bridge over the railway in Sutton-in-Ashfield which will improve safety.

The new bridge has today (Friday, 29 March) opened and will replace Kings Mill Lane level crossing which has now closed.

Network Rail chose to close the crossing due to the high number of trespass and vandalism incidents, as well as a tragic incident in 2012 when someone lost their life.

The new footbridge means that pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will no longer have to cross the railway using the level crossing and can use the bridge instead, providing a safer route across the railway. The bridge is also ramped, which will cater for pushchairs and those with additional access needs.

Andrew Murray, Director of Route Asset Management for Network Rail, said: “Safety is our top priority, so we are glad that this vital project to improve railway safety in Nottinghamshire has now completed.

“The footbridge will provide a safer route across the railway for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and we look forward to them reaping the benefits.

“We would like to thank all those living in the area for their patience whilst the construction of the footbridge took place.”
