The first meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) High Level Task Force on Tourism and Security was held on May 11th in Madrid, Spain where issues such as integrating national security with tourism security, crisis communication and travel advisories were discussed.
Representatives from UNWTO member countries and organizations such as the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as private sector organizations took part in the meeting. The meeting was held on the eve of the 105th UNWTO
Executive Council meeting being held in Madrid on Thursday (May 11th) and Friday (May 12th).
The task force focuses on five key issues — integration between tourism and security; support to the sector in setting crisis management plans and protocols, travel advisories, safe, secure and seamless travel, and crisis communication.
UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai opened the meeting. He said, “The Task Force was established by the UNWTO Executive Council to help us reinforce our action and cooperation towards safer, more secure and yet more seamless travel.”
