Inbound and outbound visits reached 270 million, 3.7pc higher, as per a report by the National Tourism Administration.
Inbound visitor numbers increased to more than 139 million in 2017. 17 countries, including Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam and South Korea, are the main sources of visitors for China with nearly 43 million people visiting China in 2017. Visitors from Asian countries make up the greatest share of inbound visits for China reaching 74.6pc.
To quote Dai Bin, the president of the China Tourism Academy, “The statistics show a prosperous landscape for the tourism industry. We are optimistic about the tourist sector in 2018 as the number of inbound visits is predicted to reach 140 million this year.”
In 2017, China’s tourist revenue totalled 5.4 trillion Yuan (£620bn).
“This year there will likely be a 5pc increase in inbound travel, and foreign exchange earnings from the business is expected to reach £91.6bn,” said Mr. Dai.
The report also shows that tourist attractions with recreation and leisure activities have become the most popular travel destinations among visitors, attracting 37.1pc of travellers visiting China in 2017. Tourism is showing a lot of promise in China with more and more Chinese people choosing travel as a means to enjoy holidays.
There is growing optimism about the development of tourism as more and more people in China choose travel as a way of enjoying their holidays.
Wang Xiaofeng, deputy head of the National Tourism Administration said, “It is estimated that the number of domestic visits will reach 385 million during the forthcoming Spring Festival holiday with income of 476 billion Yuan.”
