Last month, number of tourist arrivals to Israel, broke all records in the month of May. This was a relatively tranquil time in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In May, more than 346,900 visitors visited Israel.
This surpassed all previous records created in May 2014 respectively, shortly before the 2014 Gaza war saw arrivals thrust. From January till May 2017, a new record was created in terms of arrivals with 1.43 million new entries. Ministry of Israeli Tourism released statistics which shows that tourists’ numbers are bolstered in times of relative peace, but again drops sharply at the time of Israel’s two recent conflagrations with Hamas and the so-called “knife intifada” respectively.
It took few months to recover. Since January 2017, Tourism has injected $2.18 billion into the economy of the country, as expressed by the ministry spokesperson. The enormous number of tourists arrived by air, with just 44,000 using the land crossings with Jordan and Egypt. As per recent report from Israel Airport Authority, incited by the growth in budget flights, traffic at Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main international gateway, is also at record highs.
In April, more than 1.74 million passengers passed through the airport, which accounted a 26% jump on the same month last year.
