India is slowly gaining importance and popularity among Africans looking for medical facilities. Skilled medical practitioners, affordability and state-of-the-art infrastructure made India a hotspot for medical tourism. Unlike USA and UK where securing VISA is tough, India provides VISA in a week’s time with treatments easy on pocket.
The 2015 Report of the Global Health Workforce Alliance shows that sub-Saharan African countries are facing serious issue with dearth of health care professionals and shortage of health care coverage for those in need of medical attention.
This is definitely is a much concerning news for the continent that carries disease with highest number of malaria patients, HIV/Aids and tuberculosis. To quote medical journal BMJ, ‘’Africa experiences 24 percent of the global burden of disease, yet it has only 2 percent of the global supply of doctors and less than 1 percent of expenditures on global health’’.
Inadequate fund is one the major issues faced by the health care system of Africa. Nigeria, Africa’s richest country with more than $594.257 billion national income spends only 4.6 percent on health care. 2015 witnessed more than 40,000 Nigerians visiting India of which half came for medical purposes as per Ajjampur Ghanshyam, Indian High Commissioner at Nigeria.
