India earned Rs 40 crore foreign exchange earnings through tourism

Indian travellersIndia has earned INR 40,411 crore foreign exchange earnings through tourism in the first three months of 2016, Lok Sabha (Lower House) was informed on Monday.

Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma during Question Hour said that a total of 2.25 crore foreign tourists visited India in 2014, 1.99 crore in 2013 and 1.82 crore tourists in 2012.

The highest number of 46.57 lakh tourists visited south Indian state of Tamil Nadu in 2014, followed by 43.89 lakh tourists in west-centre Indian state of Maharashtra and 29.09 lakh tourists in north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh that year.

The Tourism Minister said the foreign exchange earnings through tourism was INR 1,35,193 crore in 2015 and INR 1,23,320 crore in 2014.
