The railways stated that it is actively making efforts to offer 100% LED lighting for all its energy requirements in railway staff colonies, platforms and stations.
In one of its statement it said that the Ministry of Railways decided to make railway stations 100% LED-lit by current financial year by March 2018. It is actually a big initiative to be responsible for providing energy efficient lighting that would greatly assist in preserving the environment too.
LED or light0emitting diode bulbs are more energy-efficient and possess a longer lifespan as compared to traditional lamps.
Till November 2017, about 3,500 railway stations had already been offered with 100% LED lights. About 20 lakh such lights were installed. This initiative would be minimizing consumption by 10% of the total energy being used for its non-traction uses, saving as much as 240 million units of electricity that would be saving the Railways nearly Rs. 180 crore annually.
The Railways has also issued directives to Zonal Railways to offer LED light fittings to residential quarters.
Zonal Railways had distributed nearly 20 lakh LED lights to railway staff till the period October 2017, under the government’s Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) Scheme.
The national transporter also aims at offering these lights on all coaches.
And the lights in 1300 non-AC second-class and 3-tier sleeper coaches have been completely transformed to LED.
