india flagIndia’s decommissioned vessel INS Vagil will be converted into a heritage museum in south India’s Tamil Nadu state, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The museum will be called Maritime Heritage Museum INS Vagli and plans are under way to set up the museum at the heritage resort of Mamallapuram near here.

The subvessel was decommissioned in December 2010 after 36 years of service and was the last of the Foxtrot class built by the former USSR (Soviet Union).

Official sources said that clearance has been obtained for towing and hauling of the submarine from Visakhapatnam where it is presently located to be moved to Mamallapuram.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa ordered for the museum to be set up in the state last year.

A first meeting of a working committee on the heritage museum was held here on Wednesday.

Proposed themes for display at the museum will be based on the maritime history of Tamil Nadu from the Sangam era to the end of the 20th century.
