In the wake of August 17, the entire country of Indonesia got flooded with the sense of pride and freedom. The denizens of the country celebrated their 71st Independence Day with parades, speeches, games, pole climbing and a pinch of awe.
On the very same day, the country earned its independence from the Dutch rule. Till then, the day got marked as the Indonesian national public holiday.
The main ceremony took place in the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta. On Wednesday, citizens and the administration participated in the merriment. It was found that the President, Joko Widodo wanted the celebration to be more inclusive and high-spirited.
The festivities started at the State Palace by a flag hoisting ceremony, early in the morning. The flag was brought in by a horse-drawn carriage from the National Monument.
The national day parade was witnessed by the citizens at 7 in the morning, followed by numerous traditional dance and music gigs.
The Jakarta administration and the Museum of the Drafting of the Proclamation organised the annual parade, which was witnessed by more than 1,000 citizens. Citizens also witnessed an impressive air show, performed by F16 fighter and Sukhoi jets during the ceremony in the capital city.
Indonesian students played the traditional drums or ‘dol’ in the ceremony. People climbed on trees and greased polls to collect prizes in various places across the nation. Children and grownups participated in pillow fights to maintain the spirit of the day high.
Apart from marking the day with celebration, the country made it to the news by sinking 60 foreign ships, which got seized for illegal fishing in the Indonesian waters. The ships were sunk at eight locations throughout the region.
