In 2014, after Joko Widodo ascended Indonesian government as its elected president, he highlighted the importance of tourism and prioritized tourism and culture to turn into main pillars for the economic growth of Indonesia. Indonesia had a Ministry of Tourism for the first time in history.
Even though it’s a newly formed ministry, the responsibilities entrusted on it are not simple either. It has the responsibility to make the tourism industry one of the biggest sources of foreign exchange revenues for Indonesian economy. By 2020, the Ministry of Tourism, in order to attain the responsibility, has set a target of foreign tourists to reach the number of 20 million.
However, with visitor number estimated at only 9.4 million in 2014 and 10.4 million in 2015, there has to be concrete measures to assist the expansion of the tourism that has the possibility to attract visitors from various parts of the world. Nevertheless, observers are hopeful that the target is not unattainable. This can be witnessed from the increasing figures of tourists in 2016, where the total number of foreign tourists pouring into Indonesia rose 12% or 12.1 million people. This year the number is expected to rise.
In an attempt to improve the tourism sector, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, praised the effort of converting traditional tourism into digital tourism. Besides calling businesses in tourism to “go digital,” he updated the cultural promotional efforts under the tagline “Wonderful Indonesia” which came into existence in 2011.
