ASD organized together with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in Vienna an industry matchmaking event for the European Defence Industrial Development Programme . The Workshop was supported by the Austrian Ministry of Defence and formed part of the official agenda of Austria’s Presidency of the EU Council.
The EDIDP is an EU-funded programme with a budget of €500 million for 2019/20, aimed to support European cooperative defence development projects. The programme’s main objective is threefold: foster the Union’s strategic autonomy, further develop industries’ competitiveness and strengthen Member States’ military capabilities.
The purpose of the workshop was to help European companies to form cross-border consortia to respond to the EDIDP calls for proposals that will be published in early 2019. The Workshop brought together more than 250 representatives from companies across Europe. Participation was particularly strong from SMEs and mid-cap companies located in central and eastern European Member States. More than 30 companies of all size presented their technological capacities and interests.
ASD Secretary General Jan Pie highlighted the importance of the event: “The EDIDP is crucial in itself and as preparation for the European Defence Fund. ASD has actively accompanied this initiative ever since its beginning and will continue to do so. Now that the EDIDP regulation entered into force, we move to implementation. Things become real, and our job as an association is now to help companies to participate in the programme. Given ASD’s broad membership and geographical footprint, we are well positioned to support the objective of the EDIDP to be a truly European endeavor with participants from all Member States.”
