This year, a record number of tourists flew to Alberta at the end of summer to find out what the province has to offer in terms of tourism. Around 78,000 foreign tourists came to Alberta by air in August, which was up by 3% from previous year.
According to ATB Financial, non-US tourists have grown a lot over the last few months with 4 out of 10 visitors arriving by air. This is the result of new direct flights between Calgary and Beijing.
This new direct flight is also expected to create 625 new jobs in tourism of Alberta and boost GDP by $76 million.
The economics team also said that this growing number of tourists isn’t inclusive of all those tourists in Alberta who come to Canada by vehicle or tour bus. ATB Financial expects air travel to Alberta to increase in 2017 due to the opening of new international terminal at Calgary Airport.
