InterDigital 5G tourism bidInterDigital, a mobile technology research and development company has recently declared that it has succeeded in a bid to take part in the UK 5G Smart Tourism project.

The project is a portion of Phase 1 of the 5G Testbeds and Trials program managed by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) under UK government and will be headed by the West of England Combined Authority subsequent to its success in attaining £5 million from the government of UK to test a superfast 5G network at Bath and Bristol.

The trial will oversee the infrastructure of 5G and place it at the Roman baths in the city of Bath along with Bristol, at the M Shed museum, in and around the We The Curious science center, and in Millennium Square. InterDigital will connect with the consortium of 25 companies and associations developed with the help of 5G network service providers, tourism and business support organizations, tech hubs, research bodies and more.

The announcement additionally strengthens the main role of InterDigital in the development of 5G and adds to the portfolio of the company in terms of UK technology research and development projects. For instance, in August 2017, InterDigital joined hands with Bristol is Open (BIO) to display its FLIPS (Flexible-IP services) solution, the first thriving Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) 5G network architecture trial in the world. The 5G Smart Tourism project will once more witness the collaboration of InterDigital and BIO, with InterDigital’s FLIPS solution delivering significant developments on major aspects of performance like latency and throughput, for virtual and augmented reality use cases in the tourism space.

To quote Alan Carlton, Vice President, InterDigital International at InterDigital, “Winning this bid is a perfect testament to the importance of InterDigital’s research and development in the mobile technology space. We are committed to helping towards the successful rollout of 5G in a way that will significantly change and enhance the way we live our lives. This is about much more than smart tourism: a successful trial will position the West of England as a leader in harnessing 5G technologies to connect citizens, homes, transport, businesses and organizations.”
