The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association’s board of directors named Juan Julia, the founder and owner of Axel Hotels, as its new board chair during its recent meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. Julia, who is based in Barcelona, is the first European to lead IGLTA since 2006. He is also the first business member from Spain to hold the position in the association’s 33-year history.
Axel Hotels, well known for its “hetero-friendly” branding, operates boutique properties in Barcelona, Berlin, and Maspalomas, Spain.
“I feel so honored to be part of the IGLTA board and it is also a pleasure being the first Spanish member named as the board chair,” Julia said. “I’m so proud of working with the amazing IGLTA team, and I’m sure we will achieve many goals together with the great projects we have ahead.”
Longtime IGLTA member Richard Gray, Managing Director for the LGBT Market, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, was elected Vice Chair. Ed Salvato, editor in chief of ManAboutWorld, and Chris Stanley, Corporate and Incentive Sales Account Director for Silversea Cruises, remain in the roles of treasurer and secretary, respectively.
