In terms of distributing tourists coming to Istanbul by country, Iranians ranked second followed by Germans which is leading to expectations that Iranian visitors accounted 7.5 percent of all tourists visiting Istanbul. This will soon be replaced by the Germans, who account 9.4 percent of the tourists visiting the city.
The total number of Iranian visitors pouring in Istanbul has shown an upward trend in the recent years. Istanbul witnesses 10 million visitors every year. The impact of the financial revitalization experienced after the elimination of the embargo on Iran has shown its influence on Istanbul tourism.
The shopping malls and stores have been filled by Iranian tourists who are fond of Turkish. At the same time, many stores have also employed Persian-speaking employees; “discount” bills in Persian have appeared in many stores.
Also, the number of Iranian tourists who can visit Istanbul without visas have increased in their numbers among the tourists who like to visit the historical city.
As per the data compiled from the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, 386,339 Iranian tourists visited Istanbul in 2013, 590,920 in 2014, 755,707 in 2015, 648,176 in 2016 and 337,259 in the first half of 2017.
In the year 2013, Iranians have ranked seventh in terms of the distribution of tourists by countries visiting Istanbul, in second after Germans in 2014, 2015, 2016 and the first six months of 2017.
