Ireland looking at record tourism growth in 2015

Published on : Thursday, June 25, 2015

irelandIreland is observing a fast growing economy and is reaping the benefits of a weakening euro. Its tourism industry is observing a robust start this year.

The Irish government is concentrating on tourism which is its major industry along with agriculture.  The country has given increasing focus on these industries since its collapse in 2008 that led to a bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Tourism grew by 12 per cent from Britain and the United States in the first five months of this year and going by the trend,  2015 will bring record profits said Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Paschal Donohoe. The number of visitations went up mostly as tourists preferred this destination after the euro fell by 20 per cent against the U.S. dollars in 2014.

The tourism industry is offering jobs to more than 200,000 people, providing more employment than any other sector like technology and pharmaceutical industries where the total workforce comprises of 1.9 million.

With cuts to value-added tax on tourism- related services and scrapped air travel taxes, last year the country recorded visitations to 4.1 billion euros (2.93 billion pounds).
