The annual awards are organised by Travel & Leisure magazine, an important bilingual travel publication with a circulation of about 550,000. Ireland was one of nine destinations listed in the “best travel destination” category during 2015 – in good company with Canada, Mauritius, Maldives, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Norway and Denmark, to take the number one spot!
Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are delighted that Ireland has been named a ‘best travel destination’ in China. Travellers nowadays have so much choice, which makes it more important than ever for us to ensure that the island of Ireland really stands out from other destiantions – so this award is really good news as we prepare to kick off our busy promotional drive for 2016 in China.
“Tourism Ireland has been working hard to build awareness of the island of Ireland in China, to help secure a greater share of the 4 million Chinese visitors to Europe each year. This well-deserved accolade will help to inspire Chinese holidaymakers to choose the island of Ireland; it also provides Tourism Ireland with another great hook to continue to promote Ireland as a ‘must see’ destination this year.”
Tourism Ireland has offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu. As well as working closely with Chinese media, the organisation also undertakes co-operative promotions with key partners – including airlines and the travel trade.
