Italian media said that up to 10 other people are missing, after several buildings in the town of Casamicciola collapsed due to the earthquake. The island is located off the coast of Naples and it has a population of nearly 50,000, and therefore is overwhelmingly popular among tourists.
Various photographs on social media portray that extensive damage has been caused to buildings that include a historic church.
As per the local reports, a hospital has also been evacuated and emergency workers are making the best efforts to free people from within the collapsed structures. Many areas of the island are said to be without power.
Emergency workers are being transported via ferries and even helicopters from the mainland.
A few workers are already on the island due to localized bushfires. It has been confirmed by the Italian red cross on a social platform that they have been working together with the local authorities to come to the aide of people who have been impacted the earthquake in Ischia.
