At least 19 people were killed when some Islamic militants had launched a car bomb and gun attack in a famous hotel in the capital of Somali, according to the account of a police officer. The adjacent restaurant was also affected in the massive hotel attack.
In the evening hotel attack on Wednesday, a car driven by a suicide bomber had crashed inside the Posh Hotel in the southern part of Mogadishu before the gunmen rushed into Pizza House, the restaurant located nearby the hotel.
Immediately, they took 20 people as hostage.
Posh Hotel is the only venue that is equipped with a discotheque in the capital of Somali.
Abdi Bashir who is the district police chief told the media that the security forces of Somali retrieved control of the restaurant at midnight after the gunmen had held hostages inside for many hours. Five of the gunmen were killed, as per the account of Bashir.
The witnesses mentioned that they had come across bodies strewn at the scene on Thursday morning even as ambulances arrived to take them away.
Ahmed Mohamud Adow, the spokesman for the interior ministry of the country said that the dead included a national of Syria who used to render his services at the restaurant. However, he did not identify the dead Syrian national. Local inhabitants claimed that he worked as a chef at the Pizza House.
Ambulance services said that 27 more civilians had to be rushed to the hospitals with different injuries. Witnesses confirmed that the attack was launched following the Iftar dinner for customers who had been observing a fast for Ramadan. Most of these people were still relaxing.
In the scene was the wreckage of three-wheeled scooters overturned, that was caught in the blast.
Al Shadaab has claimed responsibility for the attack on Thursday.
Later in the day in a separate incident, at least two soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb that was planted by al Shadaab, a militant group had struck a car that was carrying government troops in Central Shabelle outside of the capital , as per the account of the military.
