The attack was conducted just before 9 am local time. Before hunting down the guests of the hotel, a suicide bomber rammed a truck full of explosives into a barrier, just outside the hotel premises. After the blast, four gunmen started firing at the hotel guests in the restaurant and the hotel lobby. Another explosive rocked the hotel after 45 minutes of the initial attack, which injured several onlookers and journalists, who gathered outside the hotel.
The terrified guests at the Dayah hotel had to either jump out of their windows or had to hide under beds as Islamist gunmen visited door to door to hunt them down.
The hotel is widely known in the area as the members of the parliament prefer to stay in during their visit to the city.
The attack survivors informed that numerous guests had to lose their lives as the militants posed as policemen and encouraged them to come out of their hiding. One of the guests of the hotel, Hassan Nur, informed that the militants kicked down room doors and at some point posed as the rescue teams, telling those inside to come out, only to kill them eventually.
The local police force later managed to gun down all the four militants.
After the heinous attack, the militant group from Somalia, al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility.
