According to a Cairo-based journalist, four foreign journalists were being held by the police while they were trying to report the incident.
The witnesses have reported to hear a huge explosion at the Italian consulate in the centre of Cairo. One of the security officers said that the blast was caused by a car bomb but it shook the building in the downtown area of the Egypt’s capital. Underground water pipes were also ruptured, flooding the area.
Last month a car bomb attack in the city killed Egypt’s public prosecutor, Hisham Barakat. And in the same month, three more people died in another car bomb which targeted towards the police station.
In the past two years, Egypt has seen the death of almost 600 police and armed force personnel. The country’s tourism and travel industry is suffering from the burns of these unscrupulous activities from various terror groups.
