At the recently closed ITB Berlin, there was a call for tourism to conserve and protect and offer benefits for fair employment and to do more for protecting the environment. Sustainable tourism was on prime focus in the global event. According to Dr. Taleb Rifai, the UNWTO Secretary-General, tourism opens people’s minds and hearts. Tourism can transform our world and build better understanding in a world with a deficit of tolerance.
Slovenia, resolving to be 100% green, displayed its green credentials in the event. 60% of the country has been declared a nature reserve, access to drinking water has been written into the constitution as a basic right. In 2016, Ljubljana was awarded the title of European Green Capital by the European Commission. Visitors here can stay in a tree house, and harvest organic vegetables.
The growing popularity of astro-tourism was also brought into the forefront in the event. The 32nd meeting of the UNWTO World Tourism Network on Child Protection was also held as part of the event. It focused on the role of governments in advancing the fight against the exploitation of children in tourism.
