ITB Book Awards 2016 – the winners

Published on : Tuesday, January 19, 2016

ITB Berlin 2016The winners of the ITB Book Awards 2016 have been decided upon. In the year that celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of ITB Berlin the focus of the jury is on specialist travel publications. The new ‘Background information’ category highlights literature with important background information on tourism destinations currently attracting public attention. Award winners include the Federal Centre for Political Education (bpb) for its in-depth ‘Länderbericht’ series with titles about China, Korea (North and South Korea), Japan, Russia, Turkey, France and Poland.

The jury’s recommended reading for anyone aiming to visit the Maldives, the official partner country of ITB Berlin in 2016, is the Baedeker title ‘Malediven’ by Heiner F. Gstaltmayr and Wieland Höhne. Besides offering important information on the country’s history and its climate the authors provided in-depth background knowledge on nature and the environment as well as on Islam, the state religion of this island nation.

For the first time the jury took a look at books about travel destinations in Germany, starting in 2016 with the Baltic and the city of Berlin.

Every year, the annual Messe Berlin ITB Book Awards, through an independent jury, recognise publications from Germany and abroad, mostly written in German, but also translated into German. The aim of the awards is to draw attention to a wide range of travel and tourism publications for the discerning reader. The majority of the jury’s nominations are the result of their own research. Several awards can be made in each category. The ITB Book Awards do not confer money prizes.
