Though residents living near Mount Sakurajima in the city of Kagoshima, Japan are used to watching violent volcanic eruptions but this time the site was one for the records. The spectacular fiery blast sent molten lava rolling down the slopes. Orange sparks flew out of the peak like lightning flashes and dark grey smoke bellowed in the sky.
No injuries were reported. The only concern was the blast occurred just 50 km from Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai nuclear plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, however nothing really happened.
Entry to the area has been prohibited. Residential districts on the mountain foot have been evacuated. Sakurajima has witnessed severe earthquakes in the past and this was another brilliant exhibit of nature. The ‘Pacific Ring of Fire” has more than 100 volcanoes. Tourists from all over the world gather to watch these active volcanoes spewing lava and ash and lending spectacular views in their broad landscape. However Mount Ontake in central Japan took a violent turn in 2014 killing 57 people.
