A man wanting to attack English and American tourists was arrested with a knife and a small mallet by security forces in the historic town of Carcassonne. He was a radical converted to Islam recently.
The suspect hails from the southern French town of Lunel which is notoriously famous as many people have left to wage jihad in Syria and have been living in the nearby Tarn region.
The person had travelled to Carcassonne where he was arrested at the station which is just an hour’s drive from Toulouse where four matches of the Euro2016 tournament are taking place. The man was already on the security “S” watch list which keeps track of potentially dangerous individuals which includes local jihadists.
Upon being caught he confessed that he wished to attack English and American tourists after which he was hoping to attack security forces. Some news agencies report that Russian tourists were also in his target list. Security has been beefed in France specially after the terror attacks in November in Paris killing 130 people. The government is taking special measures to heighten security and trying not to miss any opportunity for impeding danger while the Euro 2016 tournaments are being played.
