As the tourism sector is undergoing a major fall ever since last year, after the wide protests in the valley and shutdowns after Burhan Wani’s killing on July 8th of 2016, the tourism department trying to capture unexplored Bangladesh and Thailand markets to attract tourists from these countries to Kashmir.
Bangladesh and Thailand are about to start with their new target regions of the department.
According to the officials, they have changed the policy and are going to places like Bangladesh and Thailand to represent Kashmir as an ideal tourist destination.
Approximately four lakh visitors visited the Valley in 2017 so far. The officials explain that a good number of visitors from South East Asia and Bangladesh came to the Valley and more are anticipated in the coming days.
“It is beginning and coming years you will see lot many tourists from Bangladesh and Thailand visiting Kashmir. We are not focusing much on Europe and other western countries. We have shifted our priority towards the countries in our neighborhood and we are hoping for a great success,” says Peerzada Zahoor, deputy director, publicity, department of tourism, Kashmir.
A tour operator, Nazir Ahmad Mir, explained that Bangladeshis frequently visit India for the purpose of healthcare and tourism. However, they usually miss out Kashmir. He explained that they discovered Bangladeshi market by doing road shows in Dhaka and other cities. “We have got a positive response and Bangladeshi tourists have started visiting Kashmir”, Mir says.
