Tourism India may be deciding on approaching Julia Roberts as the new face of international tourism. Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will approve of the plan and there are high chances that the ‘Pretty Woman’ star who is already in love with India while shooting for the film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestseller ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ will represent India and help in making the country’s asset be known to the world.
In the film, Roberts played a woman experimenting with Hindu spirituality while travelling in India.
A senior tourism ministry official tells the Telegraph, “The plan has to be approved before we approach the actress, but having an international face recognized for practicing yoga is crucial for the success of the campaign.
“The actress is an Indophile and keeps coming to the country incognito.”
The 48-year-old Oscar-winning actress appears to be a good fit for the campaign as she’s a big yoga fan who has reportedly mastered Pratyahara, one of the eight pillars of yoga.
Hindu leaders approve of the idea because Roberts is considered one of Hollywood’s most “Hindu-friendly” celebrities. She named her film production company Red Om in honour of the Hindu word for God and the Universe.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed tells WENN, “We welcome the idea of projecting Roberts as the face of yoga in India campaign, as in 2010 she reportedly confessed of being a practicing Hindu who went to the temple to chant and pray and celebrate, and she prescribed yoga to others.”
Zed, who is the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, adds, “Some reports in the Indian media in the past suggested that she was planning to buy a house in India near one of Hinduism’s holy cities, thus becoming the first Hollywood star to do so. In her interviews to Indian media in the past, she was quoted as saying: ‘I’ve received real spiritual satisfaction through Hinduism’.”
