Today the tourism department of Kashmir hosted the first ever one-day tourism festival in Kokernag, a well-known scenic spot located 25 kms from the twon of Anantnag to attract tourists to this destination.
Tourism Department today took an oath to connect the tourism potential of Kokernag and its upper regions and simultaneously endorse it as an angling destination too.
To quote Mehmood Ahmad Shah, Director Tourism, Kashmir, “the aim of the festival is to attract tourist to this beautiful scenic spot and also create awareness about the facilities available here.” He also said that Kokernag can be endorsed as one of the best adventure tourism destinations in the country.
“What we have seen that most of the tourists remain confined to Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam. So, our goal is to explore the tourism potential of Kokernag springs and Botanical garden besides other scenic spots in the vicinity- Dandipora, Daksum, Sinthan top,” he said.
Shah further added by saying that the upper altitudes of Kokernag like Margan valley, Fambran valley, Kachvan, Marwa valley, and springs like-Choharnag can easily become trekkers delights.
“The BrengiNalla flowing through Kokernag has a tremendous potential for fishing and the activities were in full swing in sixties era. So, our department is making efforts to revive angling and promote the place as angling destination too,” he added. He explained that the tourism department in this regard is working together with department of fisheries as well.
“A ‘catch and release’ angling competition was organized today here wherein invited professional anglers from Kashmir participated. We are also releasing a video on social networking sites for the promotion of angling in Kashmir valley, Shah said”
