The train was travelling from Christchurch to Greymouth with 56 passengers and three staff on-board when the incident occurred. There have been no reports of injuries to passengers or staff and the train driver has been relieved and will be given time off. Our staff are attending to passengers and providing any assistance that they require.
The Tranz Alpine is not running today due to the collision and bus replacements will be provided for passengers for the return trip between Christchurch to Greymouth. The service will resume tomorrow.
The crossing is protected by stop signs.
Emergency services and Police attended the scene.
