This financial year, Kerala has started aiming at a 7.5% growth in the arrival of international tourists, motivated mainly by a strong upsurge in inbound tourism. This Indian state plans to achieve this goal with a special focus in the spheres of culture, adventure and Ayurveda.
In the year 2016, during January-September, this region had received 9,24,125 domestic tourists and 7,38,515 foreign tourists that had witnessed 6.01% and 5.61% growth respectively over the period of 2015.
Till the month of September, the overall growth 5.98% with as much as 1.19 lakh tourists visiting Kerala, ‘Gods Own Country’, according to Shine KS who is the Kerala tourism department tourist information officer.
In the year 2016-2017, this state is estimating a growth of nearly 7.5% in terms of overseas tourists and 6.5% growth in terms of domestic tourists.
Shine said that going by the tourist arrival figures during the period from January-September, Kerala government is confident to achieve their target in the financial year of 2017. He further added that in the year 2018, Kerala would be expecting a growth of about 8% in international tourists and 6% rise in domestic tourists.
He has stated that though the growth percentage might not look very promising, it is indeed significant since Kerala government has started promoting this region as a responsible tourist destination.
Shine stated that Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are the main two source markets of Kerala.
However, this state is also looking forward to the eastern portions of the country as well as Gujarat. Shine mentioned that Kerala would soon be conducting road shows in tier II and tier III cities, alongside the metropolitan cities.
Speaking of overseas source markets, France, UK and Germany are amongst the popular ones. Shine went on to add that Kerala is also exploring other European countries and global markets. With an aim to promote tourism, Kerala has launched the ‘Green Carpet Initiative’.
