Kerala Tourism Department is on its way to welcome more tourists during the Onam festival this year thanks to some special packages it has introduced as well as programs under its initiative of ‘Responsible Tourism’ (RT).
Termed as ‘Nattinpurangalil Onam Unnam, Onasammanangal Vangam’ (Let’s have Onam feast in villages and get Onam gifts), the initiative aims to introduce traditions of the festivities to foreign and domestic visitors.
Talking to the regional news media, Kadakampally Surendran, the Tourism Minister said that the department of tourism in Kerala would be offering tourists a unique opportunity to know Onam as well as soak in the ambiance of ‘Onasadya’ (feast), watch ‘Onakkalikal’ (festival games) and actively participate in them.
He said that the program would have Onam packages for tourists by integrating small enterprises that are being operated by the local communities and responsible tourism units.
He said that it would also offer them an opportunity for interested families to welcome visitors to their homes and treat them to a sumptuous Onam feast.
The minister said that the model has been designed to promote and encourage home meals, local tea shops and hotels and also motivate travellers to spend on organic vegetables, local produce, khadi textiles, handicrafts and food items.
Tourism Secretary P Balakiran told the local media that he would be ready to launch a project during this Onam season and it is expected to offer a sizeable income to tourism entrepreneurs and also small merchants and traditional artists.
He is optimistic that such a strategy would enable tourists to enjoy a slice of the indigenous culture and traditions of Kerala.
