This year’s Oceânico World Kids Golf Championship (OWKG) will give its young participants a taste of ‘tour pro’ life by introducing press conferences and exclusive player lounges for its 2016 edition. This takes the event’s unique ‘tour experience’ to the next level.
Now gearing up for its eighth edition from July 25-29 at Amendoeira Golf Resort, the tournament is open to boys and girls in age categories ranging from seven to 18. The OWKG offers its youthful participants the chance to enjoy the same kind of elite experience usually reserved for professional golfers on the world’s major tours.
Leaderboards, marshals, caddies (often the parents of players), score recorders and a glamorous prizegiving have long been elements of the event, which now seeks to add to its established ‘tour pro’ aspect by giving the youngsters the chance to sit before the media – or perhaps each other – and take questions during tournament week. Press conferences will be set up with typical microphones and a branded backdrop.
Just like real professionals, though, the players will have their sanctuary in the form of a private and secure player’s lounge. And with European or PGA Tour caddies, mom or dad may have to wait outside while the kids prepare for or recover from their rounds!
Just a few places remain on the tournament entry list. Fees for the public are €230 for under 10s or €270 for other categories. And in keeping with the family holiday aspect of the event, on-site accommodation packages, that include tournament fees and golf for parents, are also available. These start from €1130 for six nights.
Oceânico World Kids Golf is one of many exciting events to be staged at the Oceânico Golf facilities this year. These include the tenth anniversary edition of the European Tour’s Portugal Masters in October and the year-end Grande Trofeu Vilamoura for amateurs.
