Kiwi Rail Aratere Propeller Located

Published on : Monday, November 25, 2013

KiwiRailLogoAratere’s starboard propeller has been located following a search conducted by Seaworks on Saturday morning. The propeller, which was lost when the shaft broke on 5 November, was located approximately two nautical miles from Tory Channel and approximately 120 metres deep.

Seaworks used multibeam echosounder sonar equipment and a remote controlled underwater vehicle with cameras to locate the propeller. The salvage attempt is expected to take place in a couple of weeks following some modifications to the recovery vessel. The timeframe will also take into account weather conditions and other operations being conducted by Seaworks.

The propeller weighs around 6 tonnes and would cost around $200,000 to replace.

Interislander is still working through all the options for the ship’s repair, and alternative arrangements until the Aratere returns to service.  However, all existing bookings have now been re-accommodated and new bookings have opened for foot passengers. Currently there is not a single date where there is not at least one sailing with availability for foot passengers.
