Based on year-on-year increases in international travellers on TripAdvisor, from July 2015-June 2016 to July 2016-June 2017, this tropical island has attracted international tourists and holiday planners because of more air access and available rooms. The resort town of Krabi saw the largest year-on-year increase in searches, at 41%.
This is the first time when Krabi has been registered the highest year-on-year search increase on the list. Bangkok still remains the most visited destinations in Thailand by international tourists.
Grant Colquhoun, senior director of key accounts for Asia-Pacific said that their search data showed that international tourists who planned to visit Thailand were most interested in Krabi. The inbound travel data for Thailand indicates that China still leads the way. The country had the highest percentage increase in search traffic, with a year-on-year increase of 30%, far above the 4% international average. India and Indonesia followed in second and third place, with year-on-year search increases of 16% and 12%, respectively.
The results for the total inbound traffic is topped by China and then closely followed by US, Britain, Australia and Russia.
Ten years ago, 376,000 tourists made their way to Krabi’s airport, but last year more than 2 million did, according to consultancy C9 Hotelworks. Tourism receipts in Krabi were an estimated 84 billion baht in 2016, up double on the previous year.
