The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed took the seat on behalf of the country for the next two years.
The global body responsible for sustainable tourism development elected Cape Verde along with Nigeria as the Vice President, Africa.
More than 1,300 delegates from 75 countries attended the 22 biannual session of the UNWTO, it also elected Colombia and Mexico representing the continent of America at the General Assembly.
The representatives from Europe were Romania and Switzerland while Iraq was elected from the Middle East and Srilanka from the South Asia continent on the Assembly.
The elections were done after acclamation by the delegates as agreed by the General Assembly.
Li Jinazao, the chairman of the UNWTO Executive Council conducted the elections and the General Assembly confirmed that the body suspended Rule 43 of its Statutes which stipulates secret balloting for the elections.
Mohammed felt honoured for taking the position that was last held 20 years ago in 1997. The administration has been successful in pushing tourism that has been noted by the global community. The new position will inspire him to do more in the development of the nation’s creative industry.
The new appointment will expect a lot from him and will make him more of a World citizen apart from giving a good leverage to Nigeria.
Taleb Rifai, the outgoing Secretary of UNWTO congratulated the new executives of the organization and welcomed them to bring more members. He mentioned that tourism saw immense growth in the last six years and the new leaders were expected to leverage on the development.
