With thousands of keen cyclists and pedestrians making use of the path over the summer break, Nelson Street’s new pink Lightpath, Te Ara I Whiti, has emerged as the second most popular cycle route in Auckland.
Auckland Transport’s Cycling and Walking Manager, Kathryn King, says the number of people cycling on the Lightpath is increasing.
“On average, there were 936 cycle journeys a day on the Lightpath since it opened (as at 17 January),” she says. “There’s been a real buzz about it.”
The shared walking and cycling path starts at Canada Street behind Karangahape Road, connects with old Nelson Street off-ramp via a bridge and continues as a cycleway down Nelson Street to Victoria Street as a two-way cycleway.
Later this year the cycleway will be completed and will connect with the waterfront at Quay Street.
