Representatives of Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry, the UN World Tourism Organization, or UNWTO, and the Basque Culinary Center met in Madrid at Spain’s annual FITUR tourism fair to sign the accord designating Lima as the venue.
The World Forum on Gastronomic Tourism will showcase the richness and diversity of Peruvian cuisine.
Peruvian gastronomy is “a banner tool to promote” the country, Deputy Tourism Minister Maria del Carmen de Reparaz said adding that “the Andean nation’s cuisine has been enriched by the contributions of immigrants from Spain, Italy, Japan, the Arab world and China, leading to a fusion that has won plaudits around the world.”
The World Travel Awards has named Peru as the top international destination for food tourists while Lima has been recognised as the capital of Latin America gastronomy.
The forum fits with several UNWTO objectives by promoting the sharing of information and best practices in the realm of food tourism, BCC director Joxe Mari Aizega said.
UNWTO’s Yolanda Perdomo called gastronomy an area of “increasing importance” in developing high-value, “authentic” tourism experiences.
