A little bit of Malta in the heart of London

Malta Tourism AuthorityIt is a haven for many Maltese people seeking comfortable, value for money and a central location for their stay in London.

The Fairway Hotel, just opposite King’s Cross St Pancras station, has been in Maltese hands for 63 years.

One of its owners, Benjamin Caruana, tells The Malta Independent that the closeness to one of the busiest stations in London is a great bonus for the hotel. King’s Cross, apart from being a central point in the London underground system, is also the place from where trains depart for Brussels, arriving in just two hours, and the Eurostar connection to Paris.

More than this, the King’s Cross area has been upgraded tremendously in the past 15 years or so with the opening of five-star hotels, many restaurants including favourite chains such as Carluccio’s and Nando’s and, for the more cultured, an art and design university. Its closeness to the British Library makes it also ideal for students.

The hotel, which has 32 rooms, is at present being run by Maltese couple Stephanie and Rene, who make all Maltese travellers fell at home with their courtesy and hospitality. “London, as is known, is a very popular destination with many Maltese, some of whom go there several times during the year. Being able to speak Maltese with the receptionists is however an extra asset. It makes one feel at home in a foreign land,” Mr Caruana said.

Still, it is not only Maltese people who look out for Fairway Hotel. “We have many guests from France, Italy and Spain, not to mention the many other travellers from other cities in the UK. The British love short visits to London for concerts, shows and sporting events, apart from the traditional tourist attractions.”

The hotel, he said, is busy for long stretches, and he recommends early bookings especially for the weekends and more popular holiday periods.

It has recently been upgraded with a new reception area, but renovations in other parts of the hotel are always ongoing. During the quieter period between January and March six of the rooms are to be renovated, Mr Caruana said.
