St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and St Andrew’s Day is the country’s official national day and a bank holiday (public holiday) in Scotland.
Expect Londoners to mark the Scottish national day with plenty of bagpipes, tartan, golf, whisky and, of course, haggis! Enjoy a wee dram in one of London’s best whisky bars, or celebrate in a British restaurant.
For more Scottish celebrations head to London for Burns Night, which celebrates the birthday of native poet Robert Burns every January.
Christ’s first disciple, St Andrew spent his life spreading the word of Jesus and died as a martyr on a diagonal cross (Scotland’s flag shows a white diagonal cross on a blue background).
His ties to Scotland stem from a traditional tale that St Andrew’s bones were housed in the country for several hundred years up until the Reformation. As well as Scotland, St Andrew is the patron saint of Russia, Ukraine and Romania.
