This year has seen a record number of artists submitting work in an effort to win the coveted prize, with close to 3,000 portraits from 92 countries having entered the competition. The many wonderful works have been whittled down to just three finalists by the judging panel, which this year included the historian Simon Schama.
The artists in contention for the First Prize are Borja Buces Renard for My Mother and My Brother on a Sunday Evening, Michael Gaskell for Eliza, and Matan Ben-Cnaan for Annabelle and Guy.
Hailing from Spain, the UK and Israel respectively, the trio are competing for a £30,000 prize and a commission to paint a portrait for the gallery’s permanent collection.
With portraits by many of the other entrants also on display, this is a fine chance to experience the work of some highly talented up and coming artists.
