Arriva’s joint venture business London Overground Rail Operations Limited (LOROL) has won the prestigious title of ‘European Commuter Operator of the Year’ at the inaugural European Rail Congress Awards.
LOROL was chosen in recognition of its part in the transformation of the London Overground network into a modern, reliable commuter railway, following significant investment by Transport for London and industry leading operational delivery by LOROL.
Judges applauded LOROL for its management of significant growth, the successful launch of a major extension to the network and maintaining industry leading levels of punctuality and customer satisfaction with a 25 per cent increase in passenger numbers.
The past year has seen dramatic improvements to LOROL’s operation. The completion of the extension, which links the East and South London Lines between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction and creates London’s first orbital railway in 128 years, has been a major milestone.
Since 2012 seven miles have been added to the network, train services have increased by 15 per cent and passenger journeys have grown by more than 50,000 each day. Despite this, LOROL has maintained industry leading punctuality and passenger satisfaction* is recognised as one of the best in the UK (92 per cent).
Peter Austin, LOROL managing director, said: “We have worked tirelessly with Transport for London since 2007 to transform the London Overground. Station enhancement projects across the network continue to improve both the station environment and passenger experience, whilst our focus on operational effectiveness, customer service, safety, accessibility and local community engagement is proving to be a real winner.
“This award recognises the hard work and dedication of LOROL employees in making the London Overground one of Europe’s popular and most reliable commuter railways in Europe.”
The European Rail Congress Awards took place in London on 12 November 2013.
